What’s a Detox?
A detox is a purification of the blood and organs, mainly by supporting the liver, using herbs, vitamins and minerals to support the process.
Why should I Detox?
Like a car that you would take to have filters and fluids replaced regularly to keep running well, your body needs the same kind of attention to keep it going effectively. Over time, toxins from food, water, products and our environment build up in our system causing our body’s ability to break down and remove them to slow down, or stop altogether. This can lead to inflammation, weight gain, and illness.
How does the Equilife Detox work?
The Equilife Detox contains Ayurvedic and Functional Medicine formulated supplements that work in a two phase liver detoxification process.
In Phase 1, your liver is taking fat soluble metabolites (toxins) out of your blood and converting them into an intermediary metabolite. This happens by using vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. This phase is easier for your liver to handle.
In Phase 2, sulfur based nutrients like N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), glutathione, glutamine, and glycine are needed to change the intermediary metabolite into a harmless water-soluble molecule that can be safely excreted through your urine, stool, or sweat.
It’s in Phase 2 that the body typically has trouble converting and breaks down when not supported by the necessary nutrients to support it. These nutrients aren’t typically found in our multivitamins and standard diet. The liver than recirculates the toxins it can’t metabolize back into the blood where they cause damage or get stored in the brain and bodily tissues leading to dis-ease.
Is this the same as a Cleanse?
No. A cleanse works to empty out the digestive track and is usually over a shorter period of time. A detox is a little more intense in that it requires some lifestyle changes during the course of it including some dietary restrictions.
What are the Benefits?
• Can help decrease bloating
• Support and clear skin issues
• Increase energy
• Boost mood
• Remove brain fog
• Clear joint pain and inflammation
• Speed up your metabolism and lose weight
• Deeper sleep
How long should I Detox for?
The detoxes are typically for 7, 14, or 21-days.
The first detox should be the longest to help fully remove any life long build up in your system. Following that first detox, it’s recommended to do 7-day seasonal quarterly detoxes as a maintenance to keep your body healthy.
When should I Detox?
There’s no time like the present! The average person puts on 6-10 lbs during the winter.
For women, it’s best to detox during the first 2-3 weeks of your cycle, and not during the week before your period starts.
What can I expect during the Detox?
The ideal for the detox is as follows for each 7 days you’re on it, then repeats:
• 7 days of detox pills in the morning and evening.
2 days of fasting supported by 4 nutrient rich protein, vitamin and mineral shakes. This limits
any muscle wasting while giving your digestion a rest.
5 days of a breakfast and mid-afternoon shake, and a standard lunch and dinner. No meals are provided in the kits.
The lunches are recommended to be vegan, but not necessary.
The detox recommends an elimination diet which means removing foods that are typically
inflammatory:
• Eggs
• Dairy
• Grains/Gluten
• Soy
• Nuts
• Pork and Beef
• Starch if trying to lose weight
• Nothing processed (breads, pasta, packaged foods, etc)
• Caffeine (or one 6-oz cup with food per day)
You will get a card like the one below with the detox listing all the food you can eat, but it’s basically any vegetable, low glycemic fruits, legumes, fish and poultry.
Are there any side effects?
While your body is detoxing, and especially at the start of the detox, it’s possible to experience:
• Low Mood
• Low Energy
• Headache
• Nausea
• Irregular Bowels
These are typically felt for the first 3-4 days and then gets progressively easier as your body adjusts.
It is not recommended to take any aspirin or ibuprofen for headache while on this as that affects the liver function. It’s best to rest, take a bath or shower, or have some caffeine if that’s what’s causing the headache.
Is there anything I can do to combat that?
Yes! Start cutting down on caffeine before the detox begins so you don’t have those withdrawals to deal with on top of the toxins moving out of your body.
Take it easy during this detox period. Don’t go running around and stressing your body out while it is going through the stressor of fasting.
Consider booking a light massage treatment, going for a swim, taking a sauna, or just relaxing and reading or watching a movie. The less you put on your body, the less of a reaction you will have.
Do I need to fast?
Yes and no. Your body uses up to 30% of its energy in the digestion process. If you can remove that process your body can redirect its energy to removal and repair of old and dead cells, and renewal of new cells. You’ll still get benefit, just not as much.
Can I still exercise?
Yes! While I recommend you take it easier on the fasting days (and you may have a lot of energy on those days), you definitely should get some daily movement in each day. Consider light exercise like yoga or walking on the fast days, and weight or resistance training on the other days.
Do I have to follow this exactly?
No, but you’ll get the best results if you do.
If you’re not trying to lose weight, or find the fasting too much, you can alter the Detox to your needs and pace. Do a 1-day fast each week, or do one 2-day fast, a 1-day fast, and no fast the third week, or don’t fast at all, and add some berries to each shake.
The idea is to give your body a rest, not add stress, so if you find it too much, listen to your body and adjust as you need to. Weight loss is a secondary benefit to purifying your system.
Can I take my medication while on this?
If you have any medical concerns, please check with your doctor. You should be able to take any medications you normally take, but I can’t advise you on what to do as I’m not a doctor and can’t provide medical advice.
You don’t need to take any multivitamins while on this as all are included in the Daily Nutritional Shake.
When is this starting?
Each quarterly detox happens around the seasonal changes in March, June, September and January. I think it’s best to have the fasting days over the weekend, but feel free to start when is best for you and your schedule. Typically the third day has been the hardest for most, so I find that falling on a Saturday or Sunday to be better than on a weekday when you may be at work. If you work weekends, then plan accordingly for the best weekdays for your schedule.
